FISH HABITAT BANKING

Fish Habitat Bank, City of London, ON

Daylighting of Mathers Stream created almost 2,000 m² of fish habitat (5SSR photo).

Based on the success of the Kitchener Fish Habitat Bank, 5SSR staff suggested that the City of London develop a fish habitat bank based on a creek daylighting project.  The City agreed and negotiated a Fish Habitat Bank with DFO.  Taking a more cautious approach than Kitchener, the City of London has completed 3 smaller stream restoration projects that have generated approximately more than 3,000 square meters of warm water fish habitat credits.  Using a value of $1550 per square metre of credit determined by the City of Kitchener, one can assume that the City of London’s Fish Habitat Bank contains credits worth approximately $4.5M. London plans to use the credits to offset impacts associated with their “Back to the River” initiative.
